Cardinal Sean O'Mally, archbishop of Boston.

This morning, August 5, 2024, the Holy Father announced that he has named the Most Reverend Richard G. Henning, S.T.D. as the tenth bishop and seventh Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Boston, succeeding Cardinal Sean O’Malley.

With deep gratitude, we acknowledge Cardinal Sean O’Malley’s years of devoted service as Archbishop of Boston. He left his own imprint in this archdiocese while honoring the Church’s missionary call. Cardinal O’Malley’s leadership in Boston and his contributions to the global Catholic community have been extraordinary.

Cardinal O’Malley has always been deeply committed to the Church, not just within the Archdiocese of Boston but throughout the world, particularly within the Pope’s Mission territories, those regions in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Latin America where the message of the Gospel is yet to be heard or embraced. His compassionate and tireless efforts have touched countless lives, bringing hope and spiritual nourishment to those in need.

Cardinal O’Malley has been an invaluable asset for the Pope’s missions since joining the Board of Directors of The Pontifical Mission Societies USA in late 2022. His wisdom, experience, and dedication have significantly advanced our mission of spreading the Gospel and supporting missionary work worldwide.

As Cardinal O’Malley transitions into this new chapter, we offer our heartfelt thanks and prayers. His legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire us all to pursue greater acts of compassion and missionary zeal.

Thank you, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, for your years of dedicated service. May you be blessed with continued strength and grace.
